INSULATION, ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND A HEALTHY LIVING AREA

Insulation, energy efficiency and a healthy living area, are key principles that must be in mind for any new building or renovation project. But how do you achieve these objectives? Certainly not by using impermeable products such as a closed-cell insulating coat which, not only can be very thick and occupy lots of space, but in the long run can also compromise the condition of the perimetral walls, therefore the living comfort, as a result of the uncontrolled onset of condensation between the insulation layer and the wall itself. In fact, the traditional coat has a low thermal conductivity value (λ = 0.040-0.030 W / mK), but it also has an extremely high breathability index, resulting waterproof and not breathable…

Of particular importance, in light of the increased demand for biocompatibility and energy efficiency solutions, is the extraordinary thermal character of the product that prevents the generation of condensation and consequent mold and simultaneously optimizes the energy performance of buildings. AFONTERMO® applied on pillars and concrete beams cancels the effect of thermal bridges and, used on inside or on outside walls, replaces the traditional thermal coat.
After applying a 1 mm layer of AFONTERMO® on 3 mm steel plate, and exposing the untreated side to 155 ° C temperature, 18° C of temperature where detected; this means that a 1 mm layer of AFONTERMO® shields 137° C. This is proof that AFONTERMO® doesn’t absorb heat but riflects it. On this basis we can affirm that in a house whose internal walls have been treated with our product the temperature remains mild and constant and reduces drastically the use of the heating system.
With the application of a very thin layer of the product extraordinary results have been obtained in extreme cases like for example on masonry without any kind of thermal insulation and in presence of extended mold on interior walls.
In light of the results, AFONTERMO® is the solution for all problems concerning thermal insulation, thermal bridges, surface condensation and energy wastage concerning our living area.

A fundamental characteristic of the product is its high reflectance. If AFONTERMO is applied on the exterior walls it repels solar radiation keeping the rooms cool in the summer even without the use of air conditioning devices.
For thermal insulation it is advisable to use products with high reflectance values, this helps to limit the use of air conditioning devices or heating systems and consequently increases energy efficiency and eco-sustainability.
There are various materials that have reflective characteristics: for example, alumina that can be applied on roofs in order to repel part of the solar heat. Even tin foil is a formidable reflector, but it isn’t used due to its high cost and the impracticability of the intervention. The materials mentioned have excellent reflecting properties but ar not thermal.
On the other hand, AFONTERMO®, is reflectant but also thermic. This allows AFONTERMO® to reflect up to 80% of temperature and ensure living comfort in every season.

Direct advantages obtained using AFONTERMO® heat-reflecting skim coat:

•    cost reduction in the winter for heating and in the summer for air-conditioning;
•    greater living comfort;
•    lower structural stresses;
•    absence of chemical-physical degradation of the masonry compared to common insulating materials.

Indirect advantages obtained by using AFONTERMO® heat-reflecting skim coat:

•    less overheating of the surrounding urban environment (reduction of the so called “Isola di calore”);
•   absence of pollutant release due to physical-chemical degradation of common insulating materials;
•    reduction of energy consumption with consequent lowering of carbon dioxide emissions.

AFONTERMO® is a ready to use product to be applied in two layers and is available in various finishes. The total thickness after the application is about 4 mm for the inside walls and 6 mm for the external walls.
Once AFONTERMO® is dry it can be painted using exclusively PITTURA THERMOFOTOCATALITICA AFON CASA,  which can be colored using mineral oxides.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR INTERNAL WALLS

  • Mix the product directly in its pail using an electric whisk. The product must be mixed until it becomes homogeneous creamy and soft.
  • Apply evenly using a smooth-edged steel trowel. For a correct application follow these procedures:
    • Apply the first layer of AFONTERMO® type A 1-2mm;
    • Let the first layer dry completely (about 48 hours), then proceed with the application of the second layer choosing from the following finishes:
      • AFONTERMO® Type B Smooth finish – before use add a flask of INDURITORE AFON CASA (hardner) to the pail and mix using an electric mixer. Once the second layer is dry (about 48 hours), if necessary, you can proceed painting the wall.
      • AFONTERMO® Type B 0,25-0,5 mm. Civil finish with grain size comparable to fine sand. Once the second layer is dry (about 48 hours), if necessary, you can proceed painting the wall.
      • AFONTERMO® Type B 0,5-1 mmCivil finish con granulometria paragonabile all’intonaco tradizionale. Attendere l’asciugatura (48 ore circa) e successivamente tinteggiare la superficie se necessario.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR EXTERNAL WALLS

  • After adding a flask of Catalizzatore Afon Casa (Catalyzer) for each pail of AFONTERMO® Type A CORAZZATO (Armored AFONTERMO® for external use), mix the product until it becomes homogeneous creamy and soft.
  • Proceed by applying evenly the product to the surface using a smooth-edged steel trowel.
  • When the first layer is completely dry, after approximately 48 hours, proceed by applying a second hand of the same type of AFONTERMO®.
  • Painting must be done using exclusively our PITTURA THERMOFOTOCATALITICA AFON CASA.

ATTENTION: in fall or winter and more generally in presence of high humidity levels, the product takes from 2 to 6 days to dry, so be sure the surfaces are completely dry before applying the second layer of AFONTERMO®. Do not apply AFONTERMO® Type A CORAZZATO during adverse weather conditions like rain or hail.

MODE OF APPLICATION

 
  • The screen should be applied to surfaces that are dry, clean, free of dust and grease, being careful to make 5 cm folds on vertical elements (eg walls, baseboards, walls and panels).
  • The screens must be overlapped with each other, ensuring a 5cm joint with application of metallized tape, contributing to a sealing of the zone and avoiding leakage;
  • It is essential to leave a minimum space of 2 cm between the screen and the adjacent building element.

MODE OF APPLICATION

 
    • The screen should be applied to surfaces that are dry, clean and free of dust and grease, making sure that 5 cm folds are made on vertical elements (eg walls, baseboards, walls and panels).
    • The screens should be supported end to end, ensuring a 5cm gasket with metallized tape, contributing to a perfect seal and avoiding any leaks.
    • It is essential to leave a space of at least 2 cm between the screen and the adjacent building element.
